Fishing: How Profitable Is It?

Fishies

Just how profitable is fishing in Wotlk? Well we had estimated that farming [Eternal Fire] brought in 600g/hr, this is a bit lower now due to falling prices of eternals and other materials. Fishing just by itself, after 5.5 hours of testing, comes out to 300g/hr. This is not a bad ratio since you don’t come across any problems like the other farming methods in this game. There is rarely any competition, ganking, repairs, bad re-spawn rates, ect. Now this figure is just from from the Fishing profession alone and does not include possibilities from Cooking/Alchemy. All items fished up were given an estimated price that it will go for on the auction house, thanks to Allakhazam.com. Some prices were rounded down to give more of an outcome on the lower end of the spectrum. You should expect a higher gold per hour if you choose to cook certain fishes for resale or use them in a [Northern Spices] recipe for the high end raid foods. Of course keep in mind the gold you will be saving by providing your own fish when making your favorite raid consumables.

The Experiment

For this test we fished in a wide variety of areas to find out the average gold per hour possible while fishing. Some areas were more profitable than others as well as fishing from pools vs. open water. Adjust accordingly if you plan on making the maximum possible gold by fishing for high valued fish on your server. Each location was fished for 30 minutes each and they do not include the maximum amount of casts possible in the given time. This is because we wanted an average rather than a figure due to someone with 100% focus on the bobber and casts. Fishing should be a nice relaxing activity that allows you to chat with friends, watch TV, or do other things in the mean time. Below is a spreadsheet and some notes about each location fished.

3.03 Fishing

The Frozen Sea- South of Borean Tundra where all the icebergs are. Requires a flying mount or [Elixir of Water Walking] to get to this location. Fishing skill needs to be at 575 to avoid any get aways. The fish out here are used for one of the feasts and spirit food. Both are worth more than the average fish on the auction house.

Borea Tundra (Coast) – After two stacks of [Imperial Manta Ray], started fishing open water for clams. The meat can be used to make [Dalaran Clam Chowder], a popular food that do not require spices. Great for hybrid classes that benefit from SP/AP.

Dragonblight (Inland)- Mainly fished for Dragonfin pools, with a few open water catches while waiting on a very short pool re-spawn timer. This highly sought after fish is used for [Blackened Dragonfin] and [Dragonfin Fillet]. The latter is usually what tanks use for raids.

Dragonblight (Inland) II – Came back to this area to try and farm [Pygmy Suckerfish] which only has a 10% drop rate in open inland waters. Alchemists can turn this fish into [Pygmy Oil] and then used for various items. Notably the two 15 second DPS potions [Potion of Speed] and [Potion of Wild Magic]. While these are not as popular as they could be, they may be in higher demand as harder raid content is released. Remember this is one of those items that there is a low supply of, waiting for an increased demand can mean profit if you wait it out.

Howling Fjord (Coast)- Fished purely in open water, this is one of these first places you may fish in when you enter into Northrend. Mostly fished up [Bonescale Snapper] which are used in the hit rating food [Snapper Extreme].

Grizzly Hills (Inland Open) – Did not fish in the Glacial Salmon pools here, but you can if you need fish for feasts or [Firecracker Salmon]. Mainly tried to farm [Pygmy Suckerfish] to test drop rates.

Sholazar Basin (Inland) – Tried to mostly fish in the pools of [Nettlefish], another required fish for feasts or the critical strike food [Spicy Blue Nettlefish].

Other Notes – The new [Fish Feast] is coming out in patch 3.08 and will require a total of 6 fish and 1 spice. Doing this experiment net me about a 100 of each type of fish, which is enough for 50 feasts. Recent PTR builds reduced the number of [Northern Spices] needed from 4 down to 1. So for the price of one spice, you will be able to feed a raid of 25. Although various raiders may use another type of food buff, this is still great for the slackers that don’t bring their own food.

Other Benefits of Fishing

  • Relaxing activity, easy, uses 1-2 buttons, able to chat, watch TV, ect. during it
  • Provides own fish for popular raid food buffs
  • Chance to fish up rare [Pygmy Suckerfish], used in DPS potions.
  • During queues, rez sickness, deserter, or other downtime situations you can fish for a quick profit.
  • Chance to fish up cloth, ore, leather, pearls
  • Once at max fishing skill, everyone is on equal footing, not a gear dependant activity

“Fishing skill needs to be at 575 to avoid any get aways.” Really? I mean, you can get there (450 skill + 100 hook + 20-30 pole) but is that correct?

  • http://www.warcraftecon.net Warcraftecon

Just 575 for no get aways in The Frozen Sea, to cast out here it is only 480. Yes you need to have 450 skill + 100 hook, and 25 pole. There are various +fishing gear/buffs/lines if you are missing the skill or downgrade to +75 lures.

You can easily get +100 lure from an engineer or by doing the lvl 70 daily quest.

Mines only 390 or something like that, ive just not had a chance to get a good run at it in LK.

Fishing is the worst time sink I’ve ever seen. It requires one hand and two eyes on the game to repeat a horribly repetitive task for minimal returns. It would have to be the most profitably way to spend your time to get me to even consider leveling it.

When you consider the money per hour of fishing, I strongly suggest that you include the 13 hours it takes to get to 450.

Compare this to enchanting- 3 hours to max it out at a cost of maybe 3000G, and gold per hour that can get as high as 10,000.

I fish in Dragonblight for the Dragonfins. I usually sell the strength food on the AH for 8.5 gold a piece. Considering the lowered prices of northern spice, this isnt too bad at all. And they always sell out.

    Tips:
    1. Enable ‘Autoloot’ from the interface option
    2. Set 1 to cast fishing, 2 to a lure of your choice
    3. Set sound to max, lower music and ambiance
    4. Cast,
Wait for the water splash sound
    Right click to loot
    5. Repeat

Nice constructive comments, I personally use a mod called Fishing Buddy ( http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/fishingbuddy.aspx ), it does similar things that you listed. This makes things pretty easy. The only thing is that you will almost never convince anyone who doesn’t already fish to start fishing. The post was more of an analysis for people that already are Northrend anglers.

I highly doubt that you can get from 375 to 450 in enchanting using 3k gold. 3k would buy you 15 stacks (assume 200g a stack) of greater cosmic essence which is no where near the amount that you would need to max it. Not to mention the abyss crystals requirements. Even if you buy green items or make stuff to dis-enchant, 3k would still not be enough.

Fishing like other gathering professions costs you nothing (except time) to level up. The other benefit of fishing is that you don’t have to compete with gold farmers/ninjas for herbs or mining nodes.

Disclaimer: Taco is a professional fisherman with 450 skill, an epic rod, fishing hat and a Mr Pinchy pet.
I also have alts that are maxed inscription, alchemy, jewel crafting, enchanting, cooking, mining, engineering and herbalism – skinning sux (inferior) so I don’t have it.

I always underperform the posters. I fished for an hour waiting for the Nax group to fight the queue, so I just fished in the river near Nax.

There were about a dozen stacks of Bonescale Snapper for 5s each(1g/20) in AH so only a few gold for those. The nettle were 14s each in AH (although I did buy a stack of pickled for 2g – take 2.8g of fish, add 5g of spice, sell for 2g ) So only double digit money was 13 pygmy fish that would sell for about 40g. Not quite the million gold an hour people post about, but far more entertaining and 50g better than just whining and waiting in the hour.

BTW, since I am not a nice person, when someone from the ADD generation psts to ask me how I could afford my Tundra, I now respond “mostly fishing.”

@Taco – Ya skinning isn’t great, I just haven’t switched it out for anything yet. Waiting for prices to fall as well as a better reason to min/max for raids. I did LOL at the disclaimer though, I have all that fishing stuff as well. It’s just different from other parts of the game which is why I probably like it.

@Hagu – Thats a good idea, maybe I can convince some other people that fishing isn’t so bad.

Well you should consider fishing in lower level areas such as Azshara, there you can fish large mightfish or darkclaw lobster that are needed to level up cooking to 300. I personally sell 17-18 gold per unit on my French realm thanks to that, fishing an hour in Azshara is always much more than 500g/hours.

For those thinking that leveling fiching is too long, they should consider leveling it with cooking, the best way.
