Patch 3.08 Enchanting Materials Change

3.08 Enchanting

We had talked about some enchanting changes that surfaced about a week ago. Blizzard has stated that they wanted balance the cost of enchanting dust/essences and shards. As you may know, [Dream Shard]‘s are everywhere and very cheap, while [Infinite Dust] and [Greater Cosmic Essence] are still very expensive. The original Blue post was:

“In BC we thought that dust was too common and enchants were basically gated by the cost and availability of shards. We wanted to adjust this for LK and in retrospect overcompensated, such that dust is now the rare, limiting reagent. As Excrusiate points out, this should be better next patch.”

So your favorite enchants are having their dust/essence requirements lowered and shards raised. Specifically the increase in [Dream Shard]‘s, while [Abyss Crystal] stayed about the same. This hopefully will bridge the huge gap between cheap shards and expensive dust and essences. Maybe all those shards sitting in your bank or guild bank may have a greater use since profits on them may even be lower than [Eternal Earth] on some servers. We wanted to figure out how big this change was, so we ran some numbers. We added up all the number of enchanting material required for all the high end enchants and compared the new numbers on the 3.08 PTR servers. Check the spreadsheet at the top and also note that the numbers are in no particular order. This is what we came up with:

It is obvious that they are cutting the amount of dust/essence by about half and tripling the amount of shards needed for enchants. Look for dropping prices in these enchanting materials, but over time [Dream Shard]‘s will start to increase in price. There is a huge supply of these things and we may not even see an increase in price for a while. It may be because heroic drops are getting sharded left and right and some of the population are not even 80 yet or raiding at all. Even though shards have gone up to 67 from 21, it was not too big of a change. The important thing to notice is how much [Greater Cosmic Essence] has been cut out. Surely the majority of players will benefit from this, saving a good amount of gold for their enchantments. The [Infinite Dust] reduction is also a huge change, a total of 276 dust has been cut from the enchants. Look for cheaper enchanting materials in the future and possible an increased price in [Dream Shard], but we don’t think it will be a significant increase.

I have loads of dust in the bank but the problem im having with leveling it up is getting the parchment paper to enchant it on.

  • Thwump

I (like most other professional DEers) have an entire bank tab dedicated to storing those dream shards. They have not been selling anywhere near as well as they should, so I held onto them assuming that some higher level enchant would be release that needed them. Now that they will be needed though, everyone else who has them is probably going to flood the market with them and the price might actually drop.

As for the dusts, I am holding out hope that less mats per enchant will mean that more people buy more expensive enchants, and that the demand doesn’t decrease too sharply.

This is bad news to enchanters like myself who have been milking the market for mats since wotlk. My bet is that the price for infinite dust and cosmic essence will be similar to arcane and greater planar in BC. On my sever, the prices for blue gems are similar to BC rates.

Esdras: get a guildue or pay an inscriptor 20g to make some weapon vellum3 and 5 gold for armor vellum 3. Just buy some ink of the sea from the AH (they should be cheap as inscriptors have plenty of them).

While I am not an enchanter, I have a friend DE all my greens. Recently I have even sold cosmic essence for 20g each. Right now is a good time to sell off that stuff before prices decline. I had made the mistake of buying up some Dream shards right after launch not knowing prices will fall to as low as they are now. I hope prices come up a bit to make shards actually valuable again. After all, greens are more common and for the most part, blues come from heroics.

Im currently leveling enchanting but my question is, should I hold off for the changes or keep leveling away?

  • http://www.warcraftecon.net Warcraftecon

It may be cheaper to hold off in the mean time as well as look for cheap Dream shards. Soon after he patch hits, look for low priced dust/essence since they still will be the majority of materials used when leveling.
