Farming the so called #1 Spot

Scion of Storm Items

Although here at Warcraftecon we don’t farm very much let alone recommend it, we still do periodical tests on different farming methods for those who still farm for their gold. For the past month there has been claims of the #1 farming spot in Wotlk. They are the Scion of Storm located in Storm Peaks, inside of a cave. These air elementals drop 1-2 [Cystallized Air] at a 25% rate and [Relic of Ulduar] at a 33% rate. These will be your main source of income if your not a miner/engineer. There are also mining nodes and clouds to be extracted in this area. With out these professions, this only comes out to about 400g/hour, which is very similar to farming [Eternal Fire] that we wrote about a while back. We had estimated about 600g/hour, however applying current eternal prices, it’s going to be less than 400g/hour. Take a look at profit from fishing, an estimated 300g/hour pre-patch 3.08, where [Pygmy Suckerfish] didn’t flood our inventories. With the introduction of [Fish Feast] and the falling prices of [Northern Spices], fishing is probably closer to the 400g/hour mark. So really, this spot is not much of an increase in gold per hour even with Mining and Engineering. You might as well try your luck in Sholozar Basin like we recommended before, although the numbers from the post was pre patch 3.8, you can apply your server prices to it as well as account for the faster Mining changes. This also brings up the point of having these professions. The gathering aspect of these professions are great if your are farming, however are they worth the potential loss of income generated by a profitable crafting profession? This may not apply to those who have multiple professions spread out across different characters, but more for those who only have access to two. Lets hear your thoughts on this.

Here are our results of 30 minutes of farming as a PvE spec, 5/5 T7.5 Rogue. There was very little down time and bandaged when necessary.

Results

  • Eternal Air (4.2): 54g
  • Relic of Ulduar (32): 112g
  • Vendor Trash: 24g

Total: 190g

Do any of our readers have a better experience with this spot, especially the Miner/Engineers?

also, nearby in a cave are a shedload of Wailing Winds, they have an imba respawn time and drop crystallized fire at 25%, i farm them on my prot paladin and can bring in at least 8 eternal fire an hour, plus a shedload of trash, easily brings in 700g/h

I used to be an eng/miner, but engineering has completely lost it’s “universal” status, so it had to go.
That said, my experience in the last month was that there are still very few nodes in NR to gather from. In theory you can do alright circling Sholazar/Icecrown, but even a small population of engineers active on a server will keep the existing nodes on a fairly permanent CD.
Even farming during off hours, mining was vastly more profitable by comparison, and since then I’ve tripled my daily income with JC, but if you’ve taken engineering for the arena gimmicks anyway, mining is both a necessity for crafting and the only your going to maintain a decent income.
Bottom line, if you’re only using one or two characters, engineering requires mining, but not vice versa.

I know the cave you mean, and there are a lot of clouds in that area that are NOT extractable by engineers. They look the same, but they are there to give a buff to the scions.
