Cataclysm Beta: Jewelcrafting Analysis

If I had to place a bet on the most profitable profession in Cataclysm, it would have to be Jewelcrafting. With the potential of mass glyph sales going away, Inscription, JC’s main rival in gold making, will no longer be as profitable as it was in Wotlk. Although we believe there will be a window of opportunity for scribes to make a ton of money during the release of new glyphs as well as the newly introduced medium glyphs. Only time will tell what type of system Blizzard has planned for introducing new glyphs.

What Jewelcrafters can expect in Cataclysm:

  • New Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and JC only gems
  • New Prism
  • Monocles and Vanity Items
  • New Figurines (Trinkets)
  • Craftable Fist Weapons
  • Full list of new Cataclysm gems (including meta)

Jewelcrafting has proven to be a highly lucrative profession and this will probably be no different in Cataclysm. In fact, with the new change to colors/stats to diversify the highly sought after cuts, there will be less of a discrepancy in price between all the colors. In other words, green gems will be priced comparable to red gems. We have seen this concept before when Blizzard wanted eternals to have similar costs, however we all know that is not the case with Fire and Life being significantly more expensive.

So after digging around the data-mined information about Jewelcrafting, this is what we have come up with. The profession cap is now 525 and you need at least 500 to use the JC only gems. It also looks like current profession bonuses will carry over in to Cataclysm as well. See blue posts below if you need to be caught up with what’s in store for JC.

Jewelcrafting Highlights

New Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and JC only gems

Right off the bat JC’s can craft uncommon gems that will have exactly the same stats as the current epic gems. There is also the addition of the new mastery stat on these gems as well, such as Artful Hessonite (+20 Intellect and +20 Mastery Rating).

New Prism

This replacement to Icy Prism is a bit different, but still has a 20-hour cooldown. It now requires 3 of each uncommon gem and no orb. So 18 uncommon gems total. However new orb types are nowhere to be seen, so there is a possibility they may be added later. Oh and if you haven’t caught on already, Cataclysm will be using a lot more fire and inferno like words in items where as Wotlk used words like icy and frozen.

Monocles and Vanity Items

Aside from doing the BC fishing daily, there is no other way to obtain a monocle or cuff links. JC will have the option of crafting rare quality level 1 items for resale or for decking out that awesome bank alt of yours. The materials consists of gems, bars from mining, and 50 Volatile Earth sometimes (Cataclysm’s new eternals). This just might be a placeholder and the numbers are not final yet. Or this may be a way to increase the demand and thus price of earth? Still too early to tell so don’t over think it. There may be a productive use for uncommon purple gems via Stardust. However it may not be too different from the current focusing lenses, just a vanity item with very low demand.

New Figurines (Trinkets)

Materials includes huge amounts of Volatile Earth again, probably just a placeholder.

Craftable Fist Weapons

Still no sign of craftable jewelery yet, but Blizzard is catching on to the Saronite Shuffle or the prospecting JC/DE methods. In some crafted items, new text has been added to the tooltip that says “cannot be disenchanted”. So far this has been seen on certain epic quality items and may not apply to all crafted items.

Blue Posts on Jewelcrafting

  • Some gem colors have changed! Hit is now blue. Mastery and Dodge are yellow. Intellect is now red. These simple changes have created a much more diverse matrix of gem cuts.

Warcraft Econ: Diversifying the gem cuts and colors may mean that reds won’t cost significantly higher than greens.

  • New Jewelcrafting dailies will be introduced.

Warcraft Econ: There are players that are unhappy with how new Jewelcrafting recipes are obtained, however those of you who have access to these recipes first will be able to make a profit. It seems like if you want to be ahead of the competition you are going to have to do the JC daily everyday and buy the new versions of damaged necklace’s. Players who start late in the Jewelcrafting market are at a significant disadvantage when starting out since they do not have access to as many recipes and there is a huge ramp up time to gain tokens. How long does it take to obtain ALL the current Wotlk JC recipes you ask?

508 tokens total. Which is 73 weeks or 18 months of doing the daily. However titanium powder and damage necklaces reduces these numbers.

  • Many cuts are being added to support the new Mastery stat.
  • Some new Cataclysm jewelry recipes have completely random properties, and can sometimes create superior and epic versions.

Warcraft Econ: This feature reminds me of the profession in Aion. The randomness of it can make it very profitable if you spend the time and money into it. So far this seems specific to jewelry recipes. They can “proc” into blue or purple items. This may mean crafting a blue quality ring may have a change to turn into an epic quality ring. In my short experience with Aion’s profession system is that it requires a lot of materials, money, and tries to obtain the higher quality version of what you just crafted. However it does pay off in the end since not many people “proc” that higher quality item and so the item is in high demand. This will be up to Blizzard to create the proc rates and how good the higher quality version is.

Just imagine crafting a level 85 blue ring and it all of a sudden turns into an epic one! If these types of items are BOE, there is potential for huge profits. This is another reason we love JC and think it will be the most profitable profession in Cataclysm.

  • Jewelcrafters will have some fun new (and potentially lucrative) vanity items, including fist weapons, rhinestone sunglasses, monocles, and stardust (sprinkle on players for entertainment).

Warcraft Econ: Some players just don’t get the vanity aspect of this game, but there are plenty that do. Just look at how many people paid real money for the mount and Lil XT pet. Jewelcrafting will be even more profitable it seems like. Possible vanity items could be used for bank alt and RP purposes. The addition of BOE fist weapons is also an interesting change.

Problem is, all the incoming dusts from the Random Dungeon Finder and the fact that most basic jewelry costs 2 gems instead of one will totally screw over the equivalent of the Saronite Shuffle.

  • http://www.warcraftecon.net Warcraftecon

@ Zachary – Are you talking about what JC will be like in Cataclysm? If you are, there still may be a chance of a new shuffle (most likely will be called the”Elementium Shuffle”. Enchanting materials will cost a lot more at the beginning of an expansion and it might be worth it. But there is also the problem of high cost ore, uncommon gems, and everyone trying to level their professions with these materials.

  • Kitbassher

If you expect the saronite shuffle to be what it was at the beginning of Wrath, you are absolutely right it is been overtaken by the abundance of cheap enchanting mats. But if you look at it as a way to gather materials for enchanting using what now amounts to a crafting by-product it still is profitable.

  • Steve Jaber

What, no spellpower gem? Hmmm, I think I’m missing somethigh big.

    • http://www.warcraftecon.net Warcraftecon

Casters will get spell power out of intellect in Cataclysm, so that's why there might not be a gem for it. Although the spell power stat is still on weapons.

*Edit – From recent developer chat on Twitter:

Q: What is the conversion rate for intellect to spell power for Cataclysm? Will it differ with each class?

      A. Each point of intellect grants one point of spell power, excepting the first 10 points. This is vaguely similar to attack power, where each point of strength or agility gives two attack power, excepting the first 10 points.

We realize this slightly reduces the spell power per budget on items, so we also increased the amount of spell power granted by caster weapons, and that increase entirely makes up for the deficit. Those weapons will continue to have spell power as well as intellect, and the amount of spell power will be significantly larger than in 3.3.5.

Ok, so reading your guide am I to ascertain that titanium dust will still be a viable option to obtaining the damaged necklaces and in turn the new Cataclysm JC cuts? Basically does Titanium dust = new cata jc cuts in and way at all? Or are you referring to WOTLK cuts and people catching up to the point where they will start having to do dailies only to get the new cuts? Will there be any other way to get the new cuts other than doing the dailies or has that been revealed yet in the beta? Thanks!

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Warcraftecon Warcraftecon

Well to clear everything up, I was referring to Wotlk cuts. I was mostly talking about how in the expansion, JC's that start doing the daily and gain access to recipes before most of the population will have an advantage early in the expansion till other JC's catch up. Titanium dust and damaged necklaces will probably NOT do much for you in Cataclysm. There will most likely be a new but similar system in place to gain tokens. Blue posts have said that new dailies will be added however still no word on any *new* type of dust or necklace. As soon as we know any new information, there will be a post on it as fast as we can write one.

"…..With the potential of mass glyph sales going away, Inscription, JC’s main rival in gold making, will no longer be as profitable……."

Too many blogs are chalking up the glyph permanency idea as FACT….its not!. They are JUST discussing it.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Warcraftecon Warcraftecon

I did use the word "potential", but I could see how that could be misleading.

  • sven

the tokens we use now will be useless in cata?

    • http://www.warcraftecon.net Warcraftecon

Most likely, the tokens from the Dalaran daily's will be still able to purchase Wrath patterns but not the new Cataclysm ones. New JC daily's will be introduced, one would assume that new tokens will be introduced as well.

  • Justkiddingmate

Lots of folks out there see JC on top in Cataclysm.
What Im wondering though is if anyone in here calculated the fact that blizzard has stated they will do itemization different when it comes to socketed items.
What do I mean with this ?
If for example a caster dps item >now< has 100 stam and 100 int, to create room for the socket, it becomes 90 stam, 90 int and a socket. Putting in a 20 int gem makes this item more favourable over items without a socket in terms of dps.
In the future however it will go different, blizzard will make it 100 stam, 75 intellect plus a socket with +5 int bonus as they have stated they will substract item budget from the ideal stat you want to stack ( in caster dps case – intellect ).

Another thing : Currently if you lacked hit, you gemmed hit, got extra hit from another item ? You regemmed spellpower ( now intellect ). With reforging there, you just take a haste/crit item, reforge it into hit and as soon as you got upgraded items, you change the reforged hit into something else.

This are two examples why I think JC will still be good ( Tier items all have sockets as far as I know and most people will get 2/5 or 4/5 ) , but not be as dominant as they have been in wotlk.

    Your thoughts about this ?
