Cataclysm Beta: Mining – Elementium, Ebonsteel, and Pyrite Bars

Wrath of the Lich King has Titansteel, Saronite, Cobalt, the equivalent bars in Cataclysm are Elementium, Ebonsteel, and Pyrite. Again the new profession cap is 525 in Cataclysm and the training for it is called Illustrious Grand Master. Alchemists can also create certain bars through transmutes, such as Transmute: Pyrium Bar.

The most obvious change would be the large amount of volatile earth (Cataclysm’s new eteranal’s) that are used compared to their Wotlk equivalents. In our Jewelcrafting Analysis, we also noticed these high volatile costs as well, some have up to 50. This is starting to look like Blizzard wants to balance usage of the volatile elements, in other words, keeping costs similar between all the eternals of Cataclysm. Keep an eye on these volatile earth’s at launch, they may be worth more than the low price of 2g each like in our previous two expansions.

Obsidian and Obsidian Shards

This is a new mineral that can be mined. You can obtain items like volatile fire, shadow, earth, gems, and obsidian shards. Two obsidian shards can be turned into Cut Obsidian by a Blacksmith, which can proc 1-2. Cut Obsidian is also a reagent for Blacksmiths and Engineer’s, such as Lightweight Bio-Optic Killshades. Although obsidian is a new mining node, there doesn’t seem to be an obsidian ore.

Mining Bonuses

Toughness Rank 7: All your hard work spent mining has made you exceptionally tough, increasing your Stamina by 120.

The current Toughness Rank 6 only grants +60 Stamina.

  • Elementium is the new uncommon mineral found when mining in Cataclysm, and can contain gems, Volatile Fire, Volatile Water, or Volatile Earth.
  • Pyrite is the new rare mineral found when mining in Cataclysm, and can contain gems and Volatile Fire.
  • Previous Elementium Ore and Bar used for classic quests will be renamed to Elementium Ingot and Hardened Elementium Bar.
  • We like the gathering perks as they are; not a game-changing bonus but something themed and fun. But as all tradeskills are in the design stages these are still being discussed to a degree.
