So most of you have probably heard about the Alchemy Mount, Vial of the Sands, will be introduced in Cataclysm. It will transform you into a dragon and you can have another player ride on your back, similar to the mounts that carry passengers. However prepare to spend a fortune on crafting this mount. Much like getting a motorcycle crafted, it requires you to purchase items off a vendor at a set price in addition to various other materials.
Update: Manaview is having a limited time sale, 50% off its’ products. Lasts all week!

Costs of vendor only mats:
- Alchemy Mount, Vial of the Sands: 28,500 gold
- 1x Pyrium-Laced Crystal: 4500g
- 8x Sands of Time: 24,000g (8 x 3000g each)
Other Materials Required:
- 12x Trugold
- 8x Flask of the Winds
- 8x Flask of Titanic Strenghth
- 8x Deepstone Oil
There will most likely not be any reputation discount as well. However the level 24 guild perk Bartering might possibly reduce the prices by 10% or bring the vendor materials to 25,650g.
Summary of what you need to craft this mount:
- Max level 525 Alchemy
- 28,500 Gold
According to a Wowhead commenter, theophilus77, a break down of all the materials for the Trugold and flasks:
- 72 Pyrium Ore
- 120 Volatile Air
- 120 Volatile Fire
- 120 Volatile Water
- 96 Volatile Life **
- 96 Azshara’s Veil **
- 96 Cinderbloom **
- 192 Whiptail **
- 16 Crystal Vial **
- 8 Albino Cavefish
** – If you are an elixir master it may not cost you this much of the material based on the number of elixir master procs you get.
I post this all at risk of making it more understandable and easy to acquire, but the mats and gold cost seem to be a heavy enough defense that I don’t need to worry about this information making this mount a common sight in Cataclysm.
Also, if you remember us saying that things cost a significant amount to Volatiles in Cataclysm, well we found out that they drop as a whole instead of in motes or the crystallized version. So the volatile requirements of most crafted items aren’t actually as bad as we thought. No longer do we have to combine 10 elementals to form a single one.
