The Undermine Journal is Closed

Sad news for fans of The Undermine Journal today. We just received the word that it will be closed down until further notice. Their blog has more information on the development of this wonderful tool for auctioneers. Here is a quick summary from their developer on why and if it will ever come back up.

The reasons we’re closing:

  1. Since the battle.net armory switch, the old wowarmory throws errors much more often than before, so much so that we cannot offer accurate data for most realms.
  2. The new battle.net armory does not have any XML export whatsoever, nor does it allow full scans by offering results beyond the first 200 like the wowarmory.

The conditions for reopening:

  1. The new battle.net armory auction house must have XML (or JSON) support. I won’t parse HTML due to it being a waste of bandwidth and basically a reflection that Blizzard does not support crawlers.
  2. The new battle.net armory auction house must return more than the first 200 results of a search. Ideally this would be one giant XML file with every auction in it, but if they want to spread it out over multiple requests, that’s fine, too.

This simply was an amazing tool for both pro auctioneers and newbies alike. It proved to be an excellent tool during Cataclysm when the prices of many items were unknown. We used it to look up prices on other realms, find profitable JC cuts, see if epics were actually selling for 15k or higher, keep track of the price of materials, obtained up to the minute updates when items fell below a certain price, updates on rare BOE epics that we wanted to buy at an undervalued price, and lots more. Seriously, this tool eliminated the use  of most addons and spreadsheets for us and many players. Hopefully Blizzard fixes whatever it needs to fix in order for TUJ to start working again. The best thing about it, was that it was FREE!

How has The Undermine Journal helped you make gold in the past? What about during the first weeks of Cataclysm? Any feedback or input for the developer?

    Hi guys,

I discovered The Undermine Journal (TUJ) about six weeks ago. It quickly became my "goto" site for WoW pricing information. There were too many great things about the site to mention them all. One great thing that I will mention, TUJ had the material cost of crafted items on the same graph as the selling price. Both graphs could be expanded or contracted (by you) to show the trend over time. They also showed (I used this for scroll enchants) the materials needed to craft the item and the cost per item that TUJ used to calculate material costs. With that the user could easily adjust the price/costs if he knew his material costs were lower or higher that the ones TUJ used.

I very much want to see TUJ back online.
