The freedom money brings

One of the obvious questions that AH players get asked is “why?” Why bother making thousands and thousands of gold or platinum in wow or rift? The answer is the freedom that it allows us. They say money can’t buy you happiness, which is certainly true. I mean after all, I have not once seen it on the shelves at the local Wal-Mart. Happiness is supposed to be in isle 4 isn’t it? But money can definitely buy you things that will make you happy. In an MMO that means independence and convenience. Two words which I’ll never spell right without a spell checker.

To me, happiness in the world of an MMO is being able to take care of any alt that I make without scrambling for funding. As soon as they hit the level cap I want to be able to kit them out in high end blue gear at the least so they can hop into the harder dungeons right away and not get carried. Having even more money means they can get suited up with shiny as hell purples and jump right into raiding if so desired.

I simply don’t want to grind for gear so I can grind for better gear so I can grind for even better gear so that I’m finally able to do what I have fun doing. Let me give you a few wicked examples of why having a lot of extra platinum is a great thing.

  • Every max speed mount at every level
  • Honest to god bag space right off the bat
  • Maxed bank space with max slot bags in every spot
  • Always stoked full with mana and health potions
  • Entering new markets is almost instant

I am the kind of player that will respec constantly, even if it’s from one dps to a different dps spec. Sometimes I’ll just respec to change around only 2 talent points for that matter. Not because I messed up, but because I’ll try out a spec and see if it performs as well as I think or if one is more fun than the other. And as anybody can tell you, that amount of respecing is going to add up to a ton of cash over time.

Being financially independent allows me this luxury of being able to fine tune every aspect of my character to my heart’s content which is a large portion of my enjoyment of the game. And here’s another handful of things that are self explanatory but not one is less than totally rad.

  • Able to power level any crafting profession you want.
  • You can invest in raw mats much better (hint: stokpile)
  • Experiment with ease in any market
  • It’s nice to be good at something and brag about it
  • It’s fun after all!

In short having a lot of extra money in an MMO does nothing but help. It makes the bad or annoying parts pass by faster and skips you right to the good stuff. If you do the math assuming that an epic piece of gear averages 40 platinum (which is rather generous) it would cost 520 platinum to full gear out a toon in epics the moment they hit 50. So 1,000 platinum allows you to do that twice over which to me is a damned large amount of loose cash.

Extra money allows you to enjoy more of the game even more. This and all of the above is why I believe it’s important to at least understand the concept of working your professions and the AH to make good money instead of farming. Time spent farming is time not spent living, and I can’t live with that.

Stokpile of The AH Pile is a Staff Writer here at Warcraft Econ as well as a respected member of the gold making community. He has been in the Hall of Fame four times and is very experienced with economic theory in MMO's. Stokpile uses the auction house and every profession in game to craft and sell things while using basic methods and auction house theory to make huge profits. All of these methods and theories have been proven to work and will continue to work because they're not based on the game, but instead on the people that play the game.

    Definetly agree.

Problem is when you are spending too much time earning gold and not enjoying the game. Of course if you are jobless you can spend 70hours/week playing it, but sometimes i found myself spending too much time on AH and not enough on my characters ( i play around 20h/week)

It doesn’t take long to play the auction house like you think. I believe he has an article on his site that breaks down what he does and how long everything takes him.

I also agree. I am an altoholic myself and I love having a ton of gold so I can spoil my alts. I try to make gold as efficiently as possible because I would rather spend 3 hours making 25k gold so I can buy a boe I want than raid a pug for 4 hours, kill two bosses, and lose a loot roll to someone that did 5k less dps than me and/or died 2 minutes into the boss fight.

Well put Stokpile. This is the exact reason why I spend time making gold. It let's me bypass a lot of farming, grinding, and other unenjoyable things. Once you get to a nice gold per hour, it actually saves time, giving you more time to do the things you want; in or out of the game.
