Hall of Fame

Gold Cap

The Warcraft Econ Hall of Fame is a new column featuring the few elite players that have hit the World of Warcraft gold cap of 214,748 gold 36 silver 46 copper. They will be sharing their stories with us on how they managed to hit the gold cap. Look for some upcoming interviews soon and there will be a new section added to the site called the “Hall of Fame“. If you have hit the gold cap, please contact us to be added to it and possibly be interviewed as well. You do have to provide us with some proof that you have hit this number via screenshots of your achievement summary screen and gold cap number. Include the entire UI as well as your character name to verify a live server and character. These screenshots will only be used for verification purposes for privacy reasons.

Are you on your quest up to the gold cap and would like to write about your experience of doing it at Warcraft Econ? Send us an email and we may be able to set you up with your very own column!

haha well i’ve definitely hit the cap, but don’t have it all right now, since i sent 20k with my alt to a different server, and 20k with my friend, etc.

You can definitely tell you’ve hit the cap when you go to your “Statistics” page, and the “Gold earned from Auctions” and/or “Total Gold Acquired” screens are both negative numbers. (since they overflowed into the negative side of two’s complement 32-bit signed integer ie. greater than 214748g36s48c) on not one but TWO alts.

I’m almost back up to the cap again though ~190k on my main (old) server. pretty much all from Glyphs.

also: Why isn’t this an in game achievement?
I guess one reason could be that you could cheat and just pass around the gold to others to get it, but something tells me the gold wouldn’t make it back the owner 99% of the time =P
WTB some type of golden mount for my Goblin I’m gonna roll in Cataclysm.

They only go negative numbers for a while, then they flip back to positive as you accumulate more gold. The numbers are kind of meaningless once you’ve flipped them back and forth a few times. (Fix this, Blizzard, or take it out.)

The reason they removed wealth information is because of hacking. If they gave out the achievement, it would eventually be obvious to the right person that you had alot of gold, and Blizzard respects your privacy.

I agree though, a truly epic mount that takes a boatload of gold to get would be in order for those of us that are among the Rich and Infamous. 100k mounts, 200k, whatever. Something that stands out that you excel in this game in something besides PvP, PvE, etc. There’s a lot of facets.

There is a possibility of a multi-passenger flying mount in the next expansion. Maybe this will be the next big gold sink. The gold sink in TBC was 5k for epic flying and in WOTLK, 20k for a mammoth. Just going by the pattern of a increase of 4x, the new gold sink could cost 80K.

I am a bit confused, is it still that hard to reach the gold limit ?
It seems so easy to me nowadays, with all the gold floating around.

    @ Rerun

There is so much gold in the game now it’s ridiculous. I’m up 95K for the week. It’s becoming a joke.

I’m not sure it’s that easy. I’m not quite in the same league as Zamboni, but it took me half a year to “reach” the gold cap and I’m pretty active. Six months is a lot of time, even if I had played on a high population server.

so let me get this clear, We don’t have to have the gold on us to show we’ve hit the cap, we just need to be able to prove we’ve acquired that much gold?

Just as an afterthought to my previous comment, would a screenshot of my ah mule’s wealth tab on the achievement screen do? Like I don’t actually have to have the gold cap’s worth of gold on my character? I have a tendency to spend my gold so hording the gold cap on my character is a bit of a chore.
