Gas Cloud and Ore Farming

Posted by Warcraftecon | December 10, 2008 .

With so much going on in Wotlk and the time factor of recent gold making advice, it is hard to cover everything. So I hired a friend to help write for the site. This method was used as a level 77 Hunter with Engineering/Mining as professions, which is fairly common these days. Claims to pull in at least 1000g per hour. The location farmed is Sholazar Basin, a 75-78 level zone.

Between the mote extractor and mining I found that from about 2 hours of farming, if you were to sell everything, it’s roughly 1200g per hour depending on how lucky you get with Titanium Node’s and getting rare gems. All of this is based on the prices on the auction house at that particular time.

Test Hour One:

Count:
Saronite Node: 33
Rich Saronite Node: 2
Titanium Node: 2
Steam Cloud: 17
Scalding Cloud: 5

Test hour one was done between 2am-3am server time. Roughly 815g profit. With this first hour I was ganked a couple of times and there were a good amount of other people farming as well.

Test Hour Two:

Count:
Saronite Node: 30
Rich Saronite Node: 4
Titanium Node: 3
Steam Cloud: 26
Scalding Cloud: 5

Test hour two was done between 1:45am-2:45am server time. Roughly 1450g profit. Obviously less people farming and no ganking occurred.

So from this, a good chunk of the income is from the [Eternal Fire], which are extremely easy to get with the [Zapthrottle Mote Extractor]. Every single gas cloud in the basin will on average give 3 crystals. So if someone really wanted to (which i probably will be doing soon) they could just flying around for the gas clouds and [Titanium Ore] with zero downtime. As more and more people are hitting 77 there will be more farmer alts just collecting ore in that zone and with everybody maxing out their professions that uses it, the price for [Saronite Ore] will drop pretty fast. However, there will always be a need for [Eternal Fire], as they are used in various crafted items. The price of [Titanium Ore]/[Titanium Bar] should remain pretty high as its a rare node and is needed to make [Titansteel Bar].

Also as a side note, it’s extremely easy to farm as a Hunter. As many nodes have mobs in the surrounding area so you can just stick your pet on any that are close which allows you to mine the ore/use your extractor with absolutely zero downtime. By the time your finished, your pet will have probably already dropped the mob to 50% health. Also while your farming you can make a ” /tar loq ” macro that you can spam every now and then for the nice rare Spirit Beast pet.

I do this on my hunter as well. It’s actually quite staggering how many mining nodes and gas clouds there are in the basin and how quickly they respawn. The only advice I would offer is to limit yourself to a path about 1/4 the size of the whole map, you’ll get more cracks at titanium nodes that way, since everything respawns so quickly. Titanium nodes are just rare saronite nodes from what I’ve seen, so looking for only titanium nodes is not a good idea, unless there’s enough other miners around to spawn them for you.

I can’t get over how much people complain about engineering on the forums. The mote extractor is worth having engineering by itself. I guess people will always complain.

I too am loving the Basin, even though I can only mine. With an unholy death knight I get the same pet advantage plus 20% increase mount speed.

I wish I was on a server where green quality gems were worth so much. I’m a jewelcrafter but I’ve never seen prices anywhere close to that, and currently the green quality gem market has crashed. Blue quality gems are so rare from prospecting for me I’m better off selling the ore and buying the exact gems I want, which still turns a small profit.

Prices for Titansteel bar has went down from 500g to 280g … thanks undercutters!

I sold a stack of saronite bar for about 170g 2 weeks ago, but now I guess ore is more popular for JC prospecting?

What is your experience on that?

Last time I went to Basin it was packed full of miners. Hopefully this week I actually get to mine a node that I see on the map.

I’m note sure about your realm but I keep bumping into gold farmers(hunters, mining/engineering) who spend the entire day flying around the basin all the time. It was the same in BC when they used to run in and out of orge caves, feign death, set pet on orges, mine and run out.

Talking about gold, I am currently stocking up for arena season 5. I have about 2kg worth of saronite and 3kg worth of enchanting mats.

I made a fortune in JC when arena season 4 started. It’s unfortunate that I will not be able to do the same this time around (my JC is a level 60) because the JC patterns can no longer be purchased on the AH!

Thanks for reminding me, with Season 5 coming out soon, I hope to do a post on stocking up on enchanting mats. However this is pretty straitforward, just stock up and sell during the first week of S5.
